Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing a financial advisor is a meaningful decision. These are the questions we hear most often, answered plainly so you can decide if Cairn is the right fit.

If something isn’t covered here, we’re happy to talk.

What does Cairn Wealth Management do?

We provide active investment management and comprehensive financial planning for individuals, families, and business owners. That includes building and managing customized investment portfolios, retirement planning, tax-efficient strategies, estate and legacy planning, and guidance through major financial transitions. Investment management is at the core of what we do — financial planning supports and strengthens it.

Are you a fiduciary?

Yes. As a registered investment advisor (RIA), Cairn is legally and ethically obligated to act in your best interests at all times. That means transparent advice, no commissions, and no recommendations driven by anything other than what’s right for your situation.

What’s the difference between a financial planner and an investment manager?

A financial planner helps you map out goals, analyze your full financial picture, and make informed decisions about saving, spending, taxes, and retirement. An investment manager actively builds and manages your portfolio — selecting securities, monitoring performance, and adjusting strategy over time. At Cairn, we do both, and we believe the two work best when they’re fully integrated rather than handled separately.

Who do you typically work with?

We work with people who take their financial lives seriously and want a team that does too. That includes:

  • Families building multigenerational wealth and legacy planning
  • Retirees & Near Retirees focused on reliable income and long-term stability
  • Corporate Executives managing equity compensation and concentrated positions
  • Business Owners building toward growth, succession, or sale
  • Early Career Wealth Builders navigating growing income and complexity

How do I know if I need a financial advisor?

If your financial life is getting more complex, whether that’s a growing income, a business, a major life transition, or simply more decisions than you feel confident making alone, it’s probably time to talk. The same is true if you’re just looking to simplify. A first conversation costs nothing and often brings more clarity than people expect.

What is your investment approach?

We lead with strict valuation discipline. What you pay for an investment largely determines what you earn over time, and that conviction shapes every portfolio we manage. We build customized portfolios using individual securities — not just mutual funds or ETFs — and manage them actively, meaning we’re paying ongoing attention to what’s in your portfolio, why it’s there, and whether it still belongs. You can read more on the Our Approach page.

Do you help with retirement planning?

Yes. Retirement planning is one of our core services. We help clients build sustainable income strategies, navigate Social Security decisions, plan for healthcare costs and longevity, manage required minimum distributions, and transition into retirement with a clear picture of what comes next.

Do you offer tax and estate planning strategies?

Yes. We help clients think through tax-efficient investment strategies, capital gains management, Roth conversion strategies, and wealth transfer planning. We work in coordination with your CPA and estate attorney — our role is to make sure your investment strategy and your broader financial plan are working together, not at cross-purposes.

What does it cost to work with Cairn?

We operate on a transparent, fee-only structure that covers all of our services. Before we move forward together, you’ll have a clear understanding of how fees work and what to expect — no surprises.

What is a registered investment advisor (RIA)?

A registered investment advisor is a firm or individual registered with the SEC or state securities regulators to provide investment advice. RIAs are held to a fiduciary standard, meaning they are legally required to act in their clients’ best interests. Cairn Wealth Management is a registered investment advisor with the SEC, headquartered in Vancouver, Washington.

Do you offer an initial consultation?

Yes. We offer an initial consultation to learn about your situation, answer your questions, and help you determine whether working together makes sense. There’s no obligation — just a straightforward conversation about where you are and where you’re headed.

Where are you located? Do you work with clients outside the area?

Cairn Wealth Management is headquartered in Vancouver, Washington, and works with clients throughout the Portland metro area, the Pacific Northwest, California, and beyond. We meet in person and virtually — wherever you are, we can work together.

How do I get started?

Reach out through our contact page, give us a call, or send an email. We’ll set up an initial consultation and take it from there.
